Younger Dryas Impact — The Catastrophe That Reset Civilization

Approximately 12,800 years ago, something catastrophic hit Earth. The Younger Dryas period (12,900-11,700 years ago) was a sudden, dramatic climate reversal — temperatures plummeted by up to 14°C in decades after a period of warming. In 2007, the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis proposed that a comet or asteroid fragment struck the North American ice sheet, triggering massive wildfires (a continent-wide charcoal layer exists in the geological record), catastrophic flooding as ice sheets rapidly melted, the extinction of megafauna (mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant sloths), the disappearance of the Clovis culture in North America, and a 1,200-year mini ice age.
